There is so much work involved behind the planning of a piece, specially with numerous people. I gathered a group of 5 women, photographed them based on a composition sketch I did. It felt like the painting I’ve had in my head was coming alive in front of me. What a cool feeling!! Now I need to figure out the background. I scouted this beautiful location in Bellingham that is the view that I envisioned for them to be, so I am hoping to plain air paint there this weekend to do some quick color studies. When you are coming up with an idea, its really hard to stop the brain from thinking about it. Everytime I am out I think of colors and the time of day I want the characters of the painting to be on. Different cloud shapes, differents types of weather. So many options and I got to pick the one that helps with the story. On top of that I’ve been painting on my self portrait and working on the last little details of my first painting.
Getting closer to start painting on the big canvas! Last week Diego and I got the stretcher bars, so we spent almost a whole day stretching the linen on it. Now its nice and tight and ready to go. I’ve been researching more and more about women being prosecuted in inquisition times so I’ve been looking for characters to get inspired from for the piece I am gonna do on this canvas. I read the story about Paula de Eguiluz who was a healer of African descent. After gaining her freedom, she became known in Cuba and New Spain as a powerful healer and diviner and despite all the things thst happen to her during those times( so, imprisonment and public punishment) she continued healing until the end of her life. A true symbol of strength. Sooo I got one more model to pose for the painting as her! I am choosing to add levels of symbolisms in this painting Also the past weekend I went to Bellingham, where I went to a mountain top to look at some background references and get inspired by the type of lighting I want to use on my painting. I love the moment where the sun just set, and the sky is very blue. Since it’s a multi figurative piece, I cant bring all of my subjects up the mountain so I brought my husband so I can see the lighting on him. On Procreate I am composing my image with all the elements I want on it. I attached a photo with all the lighting experiments I’ve been doing- I went a bit nuts. Im picking my top 2 and doing actual color studies that I will post next week. Stay tuned.
