Everything you need to know before applying
This is an in-person fellowship. Fellows work from our Pioneer Square studio and are expected to be present in Seattle for the full program year. Regular studio presence enables mentorship, collaboration with fellow artists, and community building.

Fellows receive a 20% discount on apartments in our partner buildings near the studio. We help you find housing before you arrive so you can focus on art, not logistics.
Combined with the generous stipend ($50K–$80K based on career stage), most fellows find Seattle living costs manageable, especially without the usual artist hustle of juggling side jobs.
1. Start with a Self-Portrait
Most fellows begin with a self-portrait as a warm-up project. This helps you settle into your new studio and calibrate with your mentors. The next painting typically explores Rehumanism while preparing for more ambitious works as the year goes on.
2. Propose Your Vision
Develop proposals for major works that align with Rehumanist principles. Present sketches, references, and artist statements. The Foundation reviews and greenlights concepts that fit the mission.
3. Create with Freedom
Once approved, you have significant creative freedom in execution. Weekly critiques provide guidance and growth, but you're the artist bringing the vision to life.
4. Share with the Public
Your work joins our permanent collection displayed across 20,000 square feet of museum-quality gallery space at the Occidental Fine Art Center. Unlike private sales where paintings disappear into collectors' homes for decades, your work remains accessible to the public, fulfilling our mission of bringing beauty to everyone.

The Seattle Prize is part of the Conru Art Foundation, which operates the Art Love Salon. This non-profit gallery hosts regular exhibitions where Seattle Prize artwork is displayed alongside works by established masters.
